Homographs are words that are spelled the same but have different meanings. They aren't necessarily pronounced the same.

Example one, different pronunciation: Tear

  1. To rip or shred- verb
  2. When crying, what falls from one's eyes- noun

Example two, same pronunciation: File

  1. A compartment to store things, usually papers
  2. A tool to incrementally smooth a surface such as a nail file for fingernails, or a metal file for manufacturing or construction purposes.

Homographs are different from homonyms. Homonyms must be spelled the same AND pronounced the same (but have different meanings).
