Inventing a new or perceived spelling of a word, in order to indicate its pronunciation

Use this tag for questions in which a word needs an example spelling to more accurately reflect its pronunciation, whether a "standard" pronunciation or a regional variant. It's also often necessary for foreign words or place names.

Examples include

  • laugh -> "larf"
  • sink -> "zinc"
  • Harvard Yard -> "Hahvahd Yahd"
  • Patapsco -> "Tapsiceau"
  • Leominster -> "Lemster"
