What have you found in a thesaurus, and why do those terms not work for you? Why do you not want to use know? You need a lot more information and explanation to make this question on-topic.

  • Perpetuate or perpetrate? Commented May 13, 2014 at 13:54
  • investigate (+ whether, not if). But the catenation is unwieldy; one level of personification is ample: This paper investigates whether .... What about 'In this paper, we/the authors investigate whether...' The passive / pseudo-passive needn't rule even scientists' lives. Commented May 13, 2014 at 14:53
