What is a word or expression for someone who cares about what social rank they're in. Someone who wants to have money, something similar to ambitious?

Vain is not the word I'm looking for.

  • @TimLymington That word comes with a distinct negative connotation with emphasis on its negativity. Ambition is not a crime. :)

Snob, as defined in Oxford Dictionaries online:

  1. a person with an exaggerated respect for high social position or wealth who seeks to associate with social superiors and looks down on those regarded as socially inferior.

  2. a person who believes that their tastes in a particular area are superior to those of other people. "a musical snob"
