I've always been very interested in language, and I love learning new ones. Right now, I'm on Duo, learning Spanish and brushing up on my German (took 2 years in HS, 3 in college). I find that studying other languages helps me to better understand English and -- to some limited degree -- how and why it works the way it does.

English being primarily a German language, I find that studying it helps to answer many of my questions about English grammar. Of course, English went through the stage of (proto-?)French infusion due to the Norman invasion of England, which brought with it Latin words and roots. And then there was the Great Vowel Shift. Both of these corrupted the more orderly structure of Old English (which was mostly like the original German as I understand the evolution of our language).

I am an advocate for a language board for the English language. Not a police function, but rather an institution to study and improve our language to make it easier for spelling, pronunciation, and consistency of conjugation and the like. This seems to me to be particularly important now as billions of new English speakers attempt to learn this highly corrupted and irregular language, which in my opinion (no matter how much experts may insist otherwise) does not seem the least bit phonetic or consistent grammatically.
