Why are the United States often referred to as America?
It was not much of a "bombardment". It was more like a "get out of my house" - with artillery for emphasis. :)

"Ironic" vs "ironical"
I like where you said "the word "ironical" jars terribly".

Why is "will not" contracted as "won't"?
your mention of the word "woll" reminded me of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy "wioll haven be" pages.cs.wisc.edu/~param/quotes/guide.html

What is the difference between using a colon and a semi-colon to join two sentences?
"Here is a lesson in creative writing. First rule: Do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you've been to college." ~ Kurt Vonnegut, A Man without a Country

Should I say "Your order is now complete" or "Your order is now completed"?
"past-tense adjective??" I don't think so; "completed" modifies the noun "order".
