Apr 6 at 15:59 | comment | added | Stuart F | How is it a gross generalization? "All languages take more space" would be a generalization. If you looked at 10 languages and found that 6 took more space that would be a reasonable evidence-based conclusion.

Jul 24, 2012 at 8:09 | comment | added | Hugo | Certainly, as a set text with carefully translated verses, the (Gideon new testament) bible is a good candidate for comparison. But probably not the best: the language of the bible is quite specific so is not fully representative of a language. Comparing aggregate translations of several works be better.
Jul 24, 2012 at 7:58 | comment | added | klypos | The last time I was in a hotel there was a Gideon bible in my room which had the New Testament in three languages, English, French and German in descending order of conciseness. Such texts are probably the best examples for comparisons.

Mar 22, 2011 at 8:56 | comment | added | Stein G. Strindhaug | Point is you have to reserve enough space for a doubling in length when translating a text, and also have to make it look good if the translated text becomes half the length.

Sep 14, 2010 at 16:02 | comment | added | Billy ONeal | Hmm.. problem here is that it's entirely dependent on the content that's actually being conveyed. Some languages will have short expressions for a given idea, some will have longer ones...
