Oct 5, 2014 at 5:40 comment added mplungjan @BenKovitz I stand corrected. Although the link is from Texas - so they are likely fixin' to make the ringer fess up before he skedaddles.
Jun 13, 2014 at 2:03 comment added Ben Kovitz I have definitely heard the word ringer used in an academic context to mean someone playing this particular role in this particular form of cheating. In writing, it often appears in quotation marks. Examples are here and here. Googling reveals plenty more.
Mar 14, 2014 at 5:03 comment added mplungjan Sure, but just mention it. In any case I disagree it is a widely used word, that should perhaps also be mentioned
Mar 14, 2014 at 0:54 comment added David M @mplungjan While I agree that most word requests are not for slang, it should be up to the OP to decide whether it fits their needs or not. That's what the up vote and accept system are for.
Mar 13, 2014 at 5:19 comment added mplungjan @AvnerShahar-Kashtan the other dictionary you mention does not give ringer as someone who cheats, but as someone resembling someone, the much more used "dead ringer" I have never heard the word ringer used for an academic impostor. I can see a dead ringer being necessary if a picture ID is required to take the exam, but not otherwise
Mar 13, 2014 at 5:08 comment added Neil W @mplungjan The OP doesn't offer a context, so the formality of language required can't be assumed.
Mar 12, 2014 at 20:27 comment added Avner Shahar-Kashtan @mplungjan I think you'll find that the line between slang and acceptable usage is very vague, and depends a lot on context. The fact that other dictionaries don't mark it as slang is a good indication of that.
Mar 12, 2014 at 18:30 comment added mplungjan OP did not ask for slang. Most word requests here are not for slang words.
Mar 12, 2014 at 17:10 comment added David M @mplungjan Why would that discredit it? It's a fairly common bit of slang.
Mar 12, 2014 at 12:48 comment added mplungjan That is a slang expression.
