Jul 26, 2012 at 23:17 comment added FumbleFingers I think vigilance is just one manifestation of John Lawler's observation that watching is volitional. For most contexts, that implies paying attention - hence "Watch this!" means "Pay attention and look at this!". But you could of course say "I just watched tv last night", without having even paid enough attention to recall what you actually saw.
