There are a few unwanted connotations, though; one is that it is sometimes a synonym of "prototype" (X is the mold from which Y derives). The other is that that X is a typical version of Y rather than a subset of Y, or a component part of Y from which the whole may be deduced or understood. I'm looking for something like "The Colt Peacemaker is a ___ of 20th-century firearms," or "of the history of the American West," not "of revolvers." | |
