Oct 29, 2011 at 17:02 comment added Jon Purdy +1 It’s worth noting that the first fly-front trousers appeared in 1650 or so, after leggings and codpieces went out of fashion toward the end of the 1500s. It seems that the word “fly” didn’t emerge until the early- to mid-1800s (in 1810 for a tent flap, then later by analogy for a trouser flap). It seems to be a bit of a mystery what they called non–fall-front trousers before then.
