The latter though hints at having to figure out some form of confusion, the extent of which should be made clear by the context

Thinking about this again today, I think the key lies in the meaning of the base words here: straighten and sort. You straighten something that's not straight and sort something that's unsorted, out if order, somehow mixed up.
