This doesn't seem to be about passive voice. Changed double hyphens to dashes
Mar 29, 2016 at 20:06 comment added RegDwigнt I am closing this for the time being, as 1) in its current form it doesn't really make sense and 2) you don't seem to be willing to take a no for an answer, no matter what. If you can address these issues, the question can be reopened. You are welcome to edit it to remove any mention of grammar, and focus on semantics, since that is your only beef here. After that, you will have to make a strong case 1) why you think "do" somehow implies completion (it does not) and 2) why a word cannot just go ahead and stop implying something (it can, happens all the time). Thanks.

Mar 29, 2016 at 20:00 comment added RegDwigнt Mikhail, perhaps you should start by reading up on what grammar means. As far as grammar is concerned, you can do any noun at all. You can do science. You can do dishes. You can do space. You can do egg. You can do car. You can do grammar. You can do can. These are all 100% grammatical. Impeccable English. Case closed.

Mar 28, 2016 at 15:10 comment added Mikhail T. Floors, dishes and other chores can be completed (done). Science can not be... That seems like a reason to me.
Mar 28, 2016 at 1:57 comment added Hot Licks You can do floors, walls, dishes, laundry, knitting, and math. There's absolutely no reason why you cannot do "science" as well.
Mar 28, 2016 at 1:10 comment added Mazura Possible duplicate of A science-verb? Sciencing?
Mar 27, 2016 at 20:03 comment added Mari-Lou A It's best to reply to comments with comments, i.e. the last four bullet points and then clarify your question. If Peter Shors etc.comments are deleted, your edit will make little sense to future visitors. Believe me, users can and do delete their comments, or sometimes comments are flagged (for whatever reason) and then may be deleted by the mods.

Mar 26, 2016 at 20:56 comment added Kyle Strand As for The Martian, part of why intended humor of the sentence comes from the "improper" use of the word "science".
Mar 26, 2016 at 20:53 comment added Kyle Strand My problem with your child's use of the phrase is that I think of "doing science" as an imprecise/colloquial way of saying "making scientific discoveries", i.e. performing scientific research. This is presumably not what your child is talking about. (Also, it's questionable how "wrong" a colloquialism can be.)
Mar 26, 2016 at 18:36 comment added Lambie Yes, you do science, play or do sports, make music, cause mayhem but farm, surf and drink....broad categories.
Mar 26, 2016 at 18:11 comment added WhatRoughBeast I second Peter Shor. What's the alternative? "Science" is an extremely broad subject, so an imprecise verb like "do" would seem to be entirely appropriate.
