Jul 1, 2023 at 18:37 comment added Edwin Ashworth @Benjamin Harman 'All I can do at this point is apologize for the mistake and thank you for your answer'.... Not so. See the comment above.
Jan 7, 2020 at 10:39 comment added user71740 @Benjamin I don't know if you're aware of this, but you can untick the other answer and select this one, or another one.
Mar 30, 2019 at 2:48 comment added Benjamin Harman @Araucaria -- I must've been on crack when I selected the answer. For the life of me, I can't reason how I didn't pick this one. I thought maybe it had been edited, but I looked at the edit history and this answer was all there when I selected. All I can do at this point is apologize for the mistake and thank you for your answer.

Jan 23, 2016 at 21:45 comment added Mari-Lou A I would add that in your answer, because it's exactly what I suspected (the apostrophe is meaningless) but I didn't know how to express it so elegantly as you did.
Jan 23, 2016 at 21:42 comment added Araucaria - Him @Mari-LouA Sorry, the system didn't ping me so I didn't see your comment. I think if you asked them they'd probably say it was - but just because that's what they've been taught. But in reality that's just one word for such speaker's. The apostrophe is nothing more than a historical hangover, a bit like a human appendix or a whale's hip bone.
Jan 22, 2016 at 19:15 comment added Tim Ward @Mari-LouA, yes, indeed, it's still the contraction of "let us". English can be weird. :)
Jan 22, 2016 at 18:56 comment added Mari-Lou A I have a curiosity, what is the function of the apostrophe in Let's you me and Bob go and see the manager together. Do speakers of Dialect B consider let's to be a contraction of let us?
