Petrified is used literally to mean "turned to stone" (as in Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona) or figuratively to mean "unable to move because of fear". In cases where it's not being used to refer to the fossilization of organic matter, it always relates to fear. (Unless you have any examples of usage to the contrary?) | |
