What is the best word to describe someone (a person) that acquires a digital image with any instrument (could be a digital photocamera, microscope, telescope or any instrument that will produce an image)?

I was thinking of the terms "imager", but a simple Google search gives me software or equipment that makes images. "Photographer" is too narrow.

If such a term does not exist what is the smallest way to describe this concept? "image creator"?
