I've updated the question with links to google results which shows "live off" is slightly more popular than "live on" in this case. (A gross "google search comparison" certainly doesn't prove anything, and I'm not refuting you. But had it been an order of magnitude difference, I would have pulled the question.) Thanks for the links I'll check them out!
