Common Generic term for 'row' and 'column'

Is there a single, more generic term that can be used to describe both a 'row'row and a 'column', such as in a spreadsheetcolumn?

EDIT: I like Kris's comment-answer of "linear array"In English, because it doesn't have so much of a loaded meaning as the other answers. "Axis" isn't bad considering I (purposefully) didn't specify the use-case. I'm tryingwe can refer to come up with a name for a programming variableline as being horizontal or vertical, but unless we say ‘a line of something’, that can either holdimplies a one-dimensional line—it doesn't communicate a row or a column, and 'array' and 'axis' can give the wrong idea in this context.

I need this term for a logical function name in an assignment for students who aren't programmers of things. So what could we say instead…? A horizontal or vertical _______?
