Oh, the little thrill of finding a community of word-nerds like myself-- what compares?
So you know my perspectives, I'm a native speaker of American English, central Rockies variety. I also speak/read/write academic-leaning Spanish and hold an M.A. in Hispanic Linguistics. My pet interests are lexical innovation, grammaticalization, and languages/language varieties in contact (that means Spanglish, largely). I ride the fence on prescriptivism vs. descriptivism, mostly with the practical view that the purpose of language is effective, precise communication, in all its glory and variety. I read voraciously across many genres-- I love experiencing all the ways a good author can manipulate my thoughts and emotions with their words.
These days, I write (fiction and non-fiction) and research; I edit and evaluate manuscripts; I translate and sometimes interpret. I'm also knee-deep in raising a child who can express himself verbally and have the tact (hopefully) not to correct the teacher's grammar.
