About

As far as skills go, in retirement I've worked hard to forget anything connected with my previous life as a desk jockey. I'm trying to keep up with an 80-acre off-grid spread in an eastern Washington canyon, yclept "the Lazy B". I've had to learn how to do a lot of things: stretch and repair fence-lines, maintain roads, fell trees, run a band-saw mill, operate a tractor, build sheds and a barn. I'm not good enough to call myself a jack of all trades yet...maybe an eight or nine of quite a few trades.

I've always enjoyed being in the high country, hunting, hiking, or just camping. The last few years, though, I've spent most of my free time over at the Lazy B. I thought 80 acres of canyon-land with half a mile of creek would be a vacation and hunting paradise, a place to relax. Fat chance! The chores line up out the door, around the corner, and up the road as far as my aging eyes can see. Still, I enjoy the work. It's given me a few aches and pains, but I know it helps to keep me from waking up on the wrong side of the grass.

I like dogs. I prefer labs, but any dog will do in a pinch. Mostly, I prefer dogs to people...which may explain why I don't have a lot of friends. But they're good ones.

I don't have much to brag about...raised three good kids, but that's mostly my wife's doing. I've tried to avoid hurting anyone who didn't have it coming. I set myself a few rules, and tried to live by them. I've fallen short sometimes. ...But I keep trying.
