I don't think anyone mentioned an important factor to usage of diminutives. Although they in fact can be diminishing, diminutive forms can also express concern or thoughtfulness, especially in such cases like a parent towards their child, a person towards their pet, etc. Diminutive forms have a certain ring to them, they simply sound better. ie. someone ...
