A 'snowclone' is a turn of phrase or pattern or template that allows items to be filled in.

The term 'snowclone' is a recently invented term to describe common cliche phrases that tend to allow slots to be filled in.

For example,

X is the new Y

popularized by the TV show 'Orange is the new Black' (which is itself from X is the new black for changing fashions in clothing color choices).

Another is:

X-ing while Y

extended from 'driving while black' whose source was probably 'driving while drunk'. Another example is 'flying while Muslim'.
