What word begins with a letter "s" and means "separated from religion"

secular
It took me several minutes to remember the word. I am posting both the question and answer so that if someone uses a search engine, like Google, to look for a word starting in "s" and meaning non-religious, that person might find this answer.

It would be better to add a dictionary definition confirming this, TA. And the times of both the question and answer seem the same, not several minutes apart. Commented Dec 8 at 0:13

1Separated is likely to be understood as implying that one was religious once, and is not religious any more; secular does not imply that.– jsw29Commented Dec 8 at 16:58
Strictly speaking, one does not get separated from religion but from a religious institution. If one is excluded from participating in the institution's activities by a formal decision of its authorities, one is said to have been excommunicated. If one has renounced one's religious beliefs, one is said to be an apostate.
(In so far as the OP was asking for a guess of what the word was that the OP has forgotten, the question should have been closed. Such questions are normally regarded as out of the scope of this site. Given that this hasn't been done, I am posting this answer, which ignores the constraint about the word begin with an s, as it may be of benefit to those who come to this page in the future.)

"the question should have been closed" - I think that is what should be done rather than attempt an answer. Especially since the primary puzzle to solve is the 's' requirement.– MitchCommented Dec 8 at 21:59

@Mitch, I regard closing as useful only when it is a step towards deleting, and therefore hesitate to vote-to-close the questions that have been around for a while and have answers, as these are rarely deleted. I wanted to make sure that, so long as the page remains on the site, those who happen to come to it find something useful, and not be misled by the existing answer. But if somebody with the relevant privileges chooses to delete this page altogether, that would be the best solution.– jsw29Commented Dec 9 at 17:40
