If you replace that with a comma, it comes a run on sentence, right? I've been trying to learn better writing skills through reading books, but at this point, I'm not sure whether it's my grammar skills that are bad or the book. Can anyone recommend any fun books with good grammar?

Edit (an example close to what I saw): I buried it in a hole so deep, even the devils couldn't find it.
