The prefix "mis-" seems to have both multiple meanings and origins in English. The Online Etymology Dictionary talks about its Germanic and Latin origins, but Webster's mentions a Greek version of "mis-" in misanthrope in addition to the Germanic origin. It's possible that sources that claim the Latin origin don't go back far enough, but I'm not sure.
