Alexis's sister. Is it pronounced Alec sis sister or Alec sis sis sister?

  • Both pronunciations are acceptable. – Peter Shor Jan 24 '19 at 20:34
  • Both are okay, I prefer the second though. – bobbin Jan 24 '19 at 21:51
  • I agree with the second, without it "Alex sis sis" from the example the speaker sounds to my ear like they don't know English that well. Especially remembering that the apostrophe is a placeholder or shorthand for a missing letter or two. – Patrick Hughes Jan 24 '19 at 23:08
  • Imagine you had to distinguish the sisters of Alec, Alex, Alice, and Alexis. Would those all sound different from each other as possessives? Should they? – tchrist Jan 25 '19 at 6:30
  • I "pronounce" it as "sister of Alexis." Problem solved! – Kris Jan 25 '19 at 8:23
