A paradigm shift? The application of the scientific method? You need to clarify the exact context and meaning you're trying to get at. – Jason Bassford Jan 6 at 19:12

Never mind the title, the @michael.hor257k suggested trial and error fits best. – Kris Jan 7 at 7:16
  • Thanks @michael.hor257k. While trial and error was not quite what I was looking for it did serve as a pointer to the word tentation which works just fine. The exact context and meaning I was trying to get at were as stated in the example, and lo...it proved to be enough for someone to provide helpful input. It's a pity this question was closed. I was fortunate enough to discover help on this particular usage. But others in a similar fix are less likely to find that best answer than they would be had the exchange of ideas gone uncensored. – Trevor Reid Mar 8 at 13:08
