I am looking for a word that describes what to do with an item when work is completed. Items are being collected and processed and when work is complete we do one of the following choices. These are the choices we deemed necessary for now but the list could increase based on business need. The business is not important here because many of our businesses have different needs. What is important here is the action and decision of what to do when work has been completed.

Choices:

  • Return
  • Store
  • Discard
  • Destroy

I realize this is a difficult question hence me posting it here. Thanks in advance.

This question appears to be off-topic. The users who voted to close gave this specific reason:

  • "Questions on choosing an ideal word or phrase must include information on how it will be used in order to be answered. For help writing a good word or phrase request, see: About single word requests" – 1006a, ab2

  • What is the context? – Laurel Feb 19 '18 at 19:09
  • What do you actually do with the object? – StoneyB Feb 19 '18 at 19:10
  • Yes I figured context would be important. The issue is many businesses are using this and the context is business based. We are collecting items processing the contents and then doing one of the choices seen in the question. – user262430 Feb 19 '18 at 19:12
  • Did you read that it cannot be based off the business. I need to keep it broad. If the answer is I do not know please say I do not know. I do not know is an acceptable answer. – user262430 Feb 19 '18 at 19:18

Be sure to include an example sentence showing how you want to use the word, with a ___ or other placeholder where the word should go. For more on how to write a single-word-request, see the tag wiki: english.stackexchange.com/tags/single-word-requests/info. Use the "edit" link at the bottom left of your question to add context and the example sentence. – 1006a Feb 19 '18 at 19:18

Disposition - it's a little obscure, but this seems to be the proper word when discussing property or objects. I've seen it used this way many times, including by the military.

  • Yeh that's definitely getting close I will play around with this word. – user262430 Feb 19 '18 at 20:09
  • Its kind of like the future disposition of an item. I think that what I am looking for. – user262430 Feb 19 '18 at 20:10

This is the word I immediately thought of. You may want to edit your answer to include more information on how the word is used. See this site. "The financial accounting term disposition of property, plant, and equipment refers to the disposal of the company's assets. This can include the sale, exchange, abandonment, and involuntary termination of the asset's service." Unfortunately, the several General Reference dictionaries I looked at do not include this definition. – ab2 Feb 19 '18 at 20:13

I answered a similar question here.

Without an example sentence it's hard to know how you want to use the word, but disposal method is a suitable heading for your list.
