When combining the titles of two works, I know most style guides call for the shared word to retain its capitalization, e.g.

Beethoven's Fifth and Ninth Symphonies

not

*Beethoven's Fifth and Ninth symphonies

But what about when the titles are italicized? Does the shared word get italics too, or not?

Bach's St. Matthew and St. James Passions

or

Bach's St. Matthew and St. James Passions

BONUS QUESTION: What is the proper term for this construction?

Why should a typesetter's font change the conventional rules of capitalization? Would they change if the words were printed in colored ink? – Rob_Ster Dec 4 '17 at 19:29
  • Ah, sorry, I didn't state the question clearly enough. I've edited the question. – ibadibam Dec 6 '17 at 19:27
