I think we can all agree to a very vague understanding of what working in Finance means. You're probably involved with financing of... things or people, or maybe you are planning or budgeting or selling.

However the more I think about it the less I understand. Is accounting Finance ? Not if you ask anybody working in corporate finance. Is corporate Finance in, say, Retail a Finance job ? Are finance jobs only the financial services industry ?

To make my question clearer, what factor or set of factors (e.g. job title, industry, client facing or not, etc) would be generally fit what is meant by "working in finance".

  • It might well mean that you mop the floor in the break room of the bank. – Hot Licks Nov 19 '17 at 23:23
  • I think the primary factor is the context in which the term is used. Within, say, a computer company, working in finance would refer to the finance department. If you were asking someone for their occupation, working in finance would refer naturally to the financial industry. If you already established that they were working in the financial industry, working in finance might refer to something more specific (loans or capital-raising, perhaps). – Lawrence Nov 20 '17 at 5:10
  • Where is your research, please, ApplePie? Broadly, finance means first lending money and after that, investing money. To what extent one is working in finance is measured by how closely one is involved with the money… For example if an IT guy knows nothing except financial apps, he is more likely to be working in finance but if finance just happens to be a small part of the expertise he knows and/or uses, then he is better described as working in IT for a financial organisation. Which of that did your dictionaries or search engines not explain, please? – Robbie Goodwin Nov 28 '17 at 2:29
