Alright, I want to know about the elephant in the room: "GIF," but I want to talk about it with respect to "JPEG"

So 9gag (and hence Big Bang Theory - the TV show) informs me that "GIF" is pronounced similar to "gift", because it stands for Graphics Interchange Format.

But I have never heard anyone pronounce "JPEG," "jay-PH-eh-g" even though the "P" in Joint Photographic Experts Group is pronounced like an "Ff" due to the "h."

So (without considering initialism) what is considered proper pronunciation of acronyms?

GIF is pronounced like the peanut butter. JPEG is pronounced "jay-peg". – Hot Licks May 24 '17 at 1:45

Oh, and SQL is pronounced "sequel". – Hot Licks May 24 '17 at 1:46

Whatever most people say, due to convenience rather than rules, becomes THE pronunciation. – Yosef Baskin May 24 '17 at 3:10

@YosefBaskin So then there would be 2 pronunciations for GIF then? The popular pronunciation among the 9gag community pronounces it like "gift" while the rest of the world pronounces it "jif." – user189910 May 29 '17 at 15:38
