Should smiley be merged into quotation marks as if it were punctuation?

I don't like to "move it, move it ;-)."

cf. Did she say "you shall?"

Or be kept outside quotation marks, as a word?

I don't like to "move it, move it" ;-)

cf. Sure you can "move it, move it" wink

This is really straightforward. Is the smiley part of the quote or not? – RegDwigнt May 14 '14 at 12:28
  • no smiley is not part of quoted text. – Dima Tisnek May 15 '14 at 8:01

Outside. A smiley is a facial or body gesture. Those gestures are often conveyed with speech, outside the quotes.

John said, "I want you to go over there and smack his ass (while winking)."

John said with a wink, "I want you to go over there and smack his ass."

Emoticons should be handled in the same manner. (If they have to be used.)
