I have a triple request but they're related.

  1. Word for a solid filled object in a given shape (ie triangle made out of steel sheet)
  2. Word for object in a given shape with only the outline (ie. A set of steel beams that form a triangle)
  3. A word like shape to refer to something that has x number of sides and/or is made with y shape
  • for the third one do you want a word or a shape? If a word, then if I grasp it correctly polyhedron. – virmaior Feb 1 '14 at 15:23
  • I think the the definitions are ambiguous... do you reckon you could rewrite them? – d'alar'cop Feb 1 '14 at 18:07
  • For 1 and 2, there are disc and circle: are you asking whether there is a generalised pair of words? – TimLymington Feb 1 '14 at 18:39
  • @virmaior I want a word to refer to something that has x number of sides and/or is made with y shape. – PsychoData Feb 3 '14 at 2:36
  • @TimLymington more generalized – PsychoData Feb 3 '14 at 2:37

1 . I think the best word is polygon. From Wolfram MathWorld:

a polygon is a set of line segments plus the region they enclose

2 . I'm not sure if there is a single word for this. But perhaps you could call it a polygon frame

3 . I would call this an n-gon. From Wolfram MathWorld:

A polygon with n vertices (and n sides) is known as an n-gon.

  • I like it! ACCEPTED – PsychoData Feb 24 '14 at 17:19
