Would you say "the number of students that earned sufficient credits" or "the number of students who earned sufficient credits"?

    Who for people (and possibly animals); that for inanimate objects (and possibly animals). The "earned sufficient credits" relates to the students themselves, not the number. – Andrew Leach Sep 20 '13 at 20:25
