I'm looking for a noun that represents the idea of ongoing improvement. It needs to be directional, alluding to movement and progress. "Improvement" by itself isn't right because it suggests that something is broken and needs fixing. All help is appreciated.

There's a word that has been borrowed from Japanese to describe continuous process improvement in manufacturing, "kaizen". I can't yet think of a single English word that describes the concept.– John DCommented Nov 24, 2014 at 22:06

1@JohnD I think that kaizen is now a valid English word, and you should post that as an answer.– 200_successCommented Nov 24, 2014 at 22:40

Would evolution or iteration fit within the context?– AloCommented Nov 24, 2014 at 23:17
