Mar 8, 2023 at 17:24 comment added gred44 @HighPerformanceMark I am trying to find a word/expression/phrase which counters the use of dehumanising metaphors, specifically parasite metaphors, frequently found in British debates. Instead of calling such people 'scroungers/leeches/parasites' I am seeking terminology which expresses that these people are content with their life despite (and perhaps in spite of) what wider society generally condemns as 'bad'.
Mar 7, 2023 at 16:44 comment added High Performance Mark I'm very confused what kind of word OP wants. When I read the question title I was expecting to find a search for a word to describe smokers or self-flagellists, or any of 101 other types indulging in self harm. Relaxing on a below-minimum-wage dole handed out by a beneficent state, what's bad about that?

Mar 3, 2023 at 13:46 comment added gred44 Correct @Heartspring although I suppose there could be long-term less positive effects. Using the example above the 'bad' would be considered less disposable income/opportunities in life. A colleague just suggested 'the boiling frog' apologue where you gradually become desensitised to negative expectations you no longer feel the pain.
Mar 3, 2023 at 13:45 comment added Yosef Baskin The title screams guilty pleasure, but the example is funding you have paid into that labels you entitled.
Mar 3, 2023 at 13:32 comment added Heartspring To clarify: It is only considered bad, but it's not actually bad for you?
