May 19, 2021 at 10:49 comment added Tuffy Are you saying that the the use of 'do + adjective' is not now widely enough established to warrant its citation by Collins in its definition 16? Or are you saying that My own suggestion that it is no longer just 'informal' (whatever that means? Or are you saying that the fact that Greek (even modern Greek) I believe) can treat adjectives as virtual nouns is not a legitimate analogy because gender and case make all the difference?
May 19, 2021 at 10:30 comment added Edwin Ashworth 'So the feature you are asking about is no more than an extension of an already established freedom.' But 'subtle', 'nice' etc are adjectives. 'Crosswords', 'business', 'the washing up' ... are nouns/NPs, the sort of thing expected after a verb. 'He did business with ...' is a typical delexical verb usage (as with 'take a bath/photograph ...', 'have a look/try ...') It's an enormous extension. // However, I can't find an exact duplicate anywhere, and though 'I don't do ADJ' has already been mentioned, that thread doesn't give dictionary support.
