Aug 27, 2016 at 21:34 comment added herisson @BladorthinTheGrey: tradition is changeable, and frequently inconsistent. Note that Fowler doesn't feel comfortable saying that the "one... himself" users are incorrect, even though he's arguing against that usage. He bases his arguments on "the interests of the language." If it was widely considered incorrect before his time, I'm sure he'd mention that as it would support his argument even more.

Aug 27, 2016 at 21:31 comment added BladorthinTheGrey @suməlic People often do, not that it is traditionally grammatically correct.
Aug 27, 2016 at 21:29 comment added BladorthinTheGrey @PeterShor But that doesn't specifically match the who which is doing the action.
Aug 27, 2016 at 21:27 comment added Peter Shor So use the gender-neutral reflexive pronoun themself or themselves.
Aug 27, 2016 at 21:27 comment added BladorthinTheGrey @PeterShor I take your point but him is inherited from John's gender the appropriate reflexive pronoun with it, with who you don't know the gender. So we do say John threw himself
Aug 27, 2016 at 21:27 comment added Peter Shor We don't say John threw Johnself. Why should we say Who threw whomself?
Aug 27, 2016 at 21:24 comment added Peter Shor Who threw whom? Who threw him? Who threw himself? There's no ambiguity.
Aug 27, 2016 at 21:24 comment added BladorthinTheGrey @suməlic Well if I said that I killed themselves no one would understand me. Surely the way reflexives are formed means that they have to match.
