Mar 28, 2023 at 18:48 comment added Stuart F Part of the confusion is that verbs of vision such as "look" more usually take an object complement or a clause describing the object, as in "I looked at him chastened and fearful", rather than a complement describing the subject (contrast "I went home happy", an example where the subject is characterised as "happy", not the home). You also have inversion with the subject of "looking" following the verb. So everything is back to front.
