Apr 21, 2016 at 18:37 comment added Greg Lee I did re-read it. Is it clear to you now? It's just a matter of terminology. If the phrases that precede and follow the "and" or "but" are both sentences`, than the example is a compound sentence. Otherwise, it isn't.
