comment What’s the meaning of “hit him round the head”?
I'd also argue that "hit" does not mean once when paired with "around the head". Breaking down phrases into their disparate parts does not always lead to comprehension. That's the point of idioms.

I'm wondering if "about" is a term that would help explain the "round" usage. You can "hit him about his head" just as much as you can "hit him round the head". And then you get "round about" as a specific thing in British English.
