Is there an American English equivalent of the British idiom “carrying coals to Newcastle”? I know the German version as well, but I learnt a different explanation. The owl stands for wisdom and since there are so many wise man in (ancient) Athens, bringing more wisdom to the city would be futile. |

Do you really answer “How do you do?” with “How do you do?” Although "Are you alright?"/"You alright?"/"alright?" rarely requires any sort of reply. This was rather confusing during my first year in the UK, when you stopped to answer the question while the other person already passed by. |
