Where does the term “Monad” come from? Lawvere, I believe, suggests that it is a contraction of "monoidal triad" in particular. In fact, the Mac Lane citation, if one reads one sentence earlier, also makes this suggestion, since it mentions "triad" and "monoid" as well as "triple". |
