comment What is the earliest mention of an “American accent”?
Part of the problem in the War of 1812 was that there was no reliable way to distinguish between American sailors and British tars. Furthermore I doubt there was an "american" accent - folks from Kentucky spoke differently than those from Maine, and I still have trouble understand folks from Georgia....
