comment Are there English figurative expressions equivalent to Japanese idiom 馬耳東風 meaning a person who doesn’t listen to other’s advice?
@tchrist, In India, East wind (पुरवाई ) heralds the rain, and traditionally agricultural societies would obviously have a special affinity for signs of rains. Just a conjecture on the significance of East Wind in Japanese and Chinese cultures as well.

comment Exact meaning of the Gandalf quote, “He that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom.”?
@ciechowoj- what pete is trying to hint at is that; --ironically-- contrary to the meaning of the quote itself; you have to break the quote in order to understand it.
