Sep 17	comment	“1 out of 100 chickens is” or “1 out of 100 chickens are”? The fact that 1 percent is mathematically equivalent to 1 out of a 100 doesn't necessarily imply that they are grammatically equivalent.
Sep 11	comment	Is “plunger” a familiar word for part of a phone? I don't think I've ever heard this part of the telephone called a plunger. Perhaps its a regional or industry term.

Sep 10	comment	How is “lay bare” sexual? Don't forget that lay itself is also slang for “have sex with”, adding another layer of innuendo.
Sep 9	comment	“Why and for what reasons” I suppose it also suggests that why is being used to ask for a deliberate reason (Why did you eat the ice-cream?), rather than explaining the history or mechanism that caused an outcome (Why did the ice-cream melt?).
