I feel like program and lifecycle activities accurately describe the supplementary actions, but I'm looking for something to describe the artifacts that are necessary to complete those actions. Sorry if that was not clear.

@Mitch: I am not sure which came first. The use of punctuation to make faces and represent emotions apparently pre-dates the Internet. The Japanese emoji may have evolved separately, since they do not have the same punctuation marks with which to make faces in text.

@HotLicks: I agree, and there certainly are arguments both ways. However: the Unicode standard includes a block called Emoticons, which includes specific characters for expressing emotions: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emoticons_(Unicode_block)
