Homographs are words that are spelled the same but have different meanings. They aren't necessarily pronounced the same.

Example one, different pronunciation: Tear

  1. To rip or shred- verb
  2. When crying, what falls from one's eyes- noun

Example two, same pronunciation: File

  1. A compartment to store things, usually papers
  2. A tool to incrementally smooth a surface such as a nail file for fingernails, or an metal file for manufacturing or construction purposes.

Homographs are different from homonyms. Homonyms must be spelled the same AND pronounced the same (but have different meanings).
