I know forte is pronounced like FOR-tay as the musical term. But what is the correct pronunciation when it means someone's strong point? I thought it was something other than FOR-tay, but I often hear FOR-tay there as well. What is the traditional pronunciation in English, and is there some consensus among educated native speakers? I know the OED (2nd ed.) says this:

'fɔːti, 'fɔːteɪ, formerly fɔːt

This question seems more like peeving about a mispronunciation, so I'm voting to close. – simchona Aug 5 '12 at 2:42

I beg to respectfully disagree. "Forte" as one's strong point is, I understand, from the Latin; "forte" pronounced "fortay" is a musical term that is totally unrelated to "forte". – Claudette C. Smith Aug 5 '12 at 3:04

"Fortay" pronunciation is correct when the word "forte" is being used as a musical term. When used to mean "one's strong suit", it is correctly pronounced "fort". I do not believe it's merely a mispronunciation, but two separate words, with two distinct meanings. I just thought this site was for people who enjoy the correct usage of American English, and revel in its proper use and constant evolution. I guess I was wrong. You guys are just a lot smarter than I -- or, at least, have better educations. I am a mere autodidact. – Claudette C. Smith Aug 5 '12 at 3:20

By "correct pronunciation", do you mean "in line with the etymology", or do you mean "what people actually say"? This runs the risk of turning into a prescriptivist/descriptivist debate. For my money, I've never heard anyone say anything other than "fortay", for this spelling; but I'm prepared to accept that I live in a faraway little corner of the world, and this may well be a regionalism. – user16269 Aug 5 '12 at 6:17
