On Stack Exchange, we believe the core moderators should come from the community, and be elected by the community itself through popular vote. We hold regular elections to determine who these community moderators will be.
Hi, I'm JS Bangs! You may remember me from such questions as Did English ever have a formal version of "you"? and Why is "q" followed by a "u"? I'm one of the highest-ranked users on English.SE, I'm frequently spotted in the chat room, and I'm active on meta whenever something interesting comes up. If you elect me as moderator, pretty much all of these things are sure to increase. Consider carefully whether you want that before you vote for me.
My pet peeve is tags. Much of the time they're terrible. If elected moderator, I would certainly use my godlike powers to help clean them up, rather than for evil.
Who: I've been a part of this community for a year now (shiny Yearling badge was earned two weeks ago), and ever since I've been here I've loved it. In my real life, I'm a university student studying Computer Science and Economics.
I can spot our new problem user at 50 paces. I have had helpful flags on nearly all of his latest appearances
I haven't only been on the site for a year, I've been active for all of this time. This includes questions, answers, and edits
I'm available in chat more often than not--meaning that I'm available on a real-time basis, not just by flags or pings in comments
I can bake a mean coffee cake.
I haven't been a perfect user by any means. I am human, and sometimes my emotions get the better of me. However, this has never impeded my ability to spot issues with questions or users, and my goals are to improve the site.
As your moderator, I will be accessible, efficient and effective.
After some deliberation, I've decided to throw my hat into the ring.
Some may think that I'm too much of a newcomer to take on this honor and responsibility. (That may be a fair assessment, and there are other worthy candidates running.)
I try to be positive, kind, and respectful. If this community believes I would make a good moderator, then I'm quite willing to serve in that capacity. If others are elected instead, then I'll strive to continue being a helpful and beneficial member.
If elected, I would use my moderator privileges gingerly, letting the community as a whole decide the fate of all but the most patently inappropriate questions and answers. In other words, I would moderate with moderation.
Thanks to all who make this an enjoyable yet worthwhile place to visit.
To any who are interested, I work in the field of higher education.
As a moderator I would have a slow trigger finger on the close button, but be quick to mark duplicates or suggest moves to other SE sites. I am not an English language teacher or expert, just a native speaker who likes to answer questions asked by English learners.
One would probably consider me a "soft" moderator. If you want a soft moderator, vote for me. If you want a "hard" moderator, don't.
Please see 'Comment 1-2-3' and 'Comment 4-5-6', on the nomination tab, that state my opinions about six closed questions
I understand the need to have moderators for a site like this, and would like to nominate myself to this position.
I have been a part of this site since early beta, and have watched it grow in leaps and bounds since then, and don't think that the future will look much different. I want a bigger part in this right future.
As a moderator I will always allow the community at-large to decide what is good and what is bad using the conventions and tools available to it - the FAQ, voting, flagging, the close button. However the flagging tools are there for a reason and will act on these notifications sensibly. I don't have a power-hungry bone in my body but do like to see things done the right way and in a fair way. I'm also not a pedant or literalist, and do have the ability to read between the lines rather than take things just on face-value.
So, I nominate myself.
As qualifications, unverifiable as they are by you, the votee, I will mention my 13-year position as board member of the housing complex I used to live in (33 apartments), so I have some experience with handling things that aren't always cut and dry. People are human, as the saying goes.
I am in chat way more than is healthy (33.8k messages)
What does this tell you?
I know how to use the tools.
The system likes me.
I'm regularly available to look at the site.
I talk to people to help resolve their issues.
I believe in keeping the site clean.
A few in the community might say that I am a bit trigger happy with close votes, and I accept that I might be a bit snarky occasionally, I'm far from perfect. This all comes from a place of love. I want EL&U to be a great academic resource and enlightening place for serious English language enthusiasts. Because of this, I am 100% behind the English language learners proposal, to give a place for the questions about English that aren't suitable here. Most of all I want the community here to grow as a respected English language resource.
As your moderator I will be considerate to newbies, but also be firm with unwanted content.
I would like to nominate myself for the position of community moderator.
I am a 20k user on English Language & Usage, Meta Stack Overflow, and Drupal Answers.
In the six sites where my reputation is higher, I have the "deputy" badge in all of them but one for correctly flagging 50 posts, and the "reviewer" badge in all of them for reviewing a hundred posts, and taking action in at least two hundred of them.
My useful flags on EL&U are currently 287. With 4801 votes, I am the fifth user with the most votes since EL&U has been launched.
My activity on the site includes meta activities, such has voting to close, voting to delete, reviewing posts, and flagging posts.
Being active on Meta Stack Overflow, I know what the general consensus about some topics is, including the consensus of who is moderator in some Stack Exchange site. If I am elected moderator, I will apply my experience as moderator to this site, respecting the decisions taken in the past from the other moderators.
I am currently moderator on Drupal Answers, and I have been pro tem moderator for the same site.
As I said last go-around, vote for me or you will be thwacked.
Or something like that. I don't actually remember what my nomination said last time, but I know it involved thwacking. Thwacking is important, especially of people who commit puns. So keep those puns to yourself, and all will be well. Well, that, and do try to do a little research before posting questions, and be nice to your fellow punsters humans, and don't get all trigger-happy on the "general reference" close button. (Just 'cause you found a nifty video about how a frozen armadillo reacts to electrical stimulus right there on the first page of search results doesn't mean you ought to close that question about how game came to mean both a hunted animal and a fun pastime.)
Anyway. So, I'm Marthaª, and I wouldn't mind being your moderator. I think. (I also wanted to send this election into a primary phase. Mwa ha ha ha ha!)
Oh, and thwack. You know for what. Don't give me that innocent look.
The call for moderators seems connected to recent events. If the purpose of adding more moderators is to have more hands available to quickly delete abusive questions, then I’m happy to volunteer and do my part.
Please understand that I am volunteering, not campaigning. See my user profile for factual information about my activities on English.SE.
I’ve been asked to disclose some relevant personal information. I am a lifelong IT guy nearing age 50. I have managed computer installations for large user communities in education, software development, and manufacturing. I volunteer for the benefit of a local elementary school and a local religious community. My personal ethics are inclusive and tolerant.
I have been a member since May 2011. I spend much of my weekday in chat (52K messages). I help out when I can, editing (176 edits) and voting (60 close votes) and such. I would be glad to moderate if the community will have me. I look good in blue.
I am the mother of two sweet young boys who have declared me the most awesome mommy ever. I have learned patience and temperance from them, and I would apply the same kindness in helping wayward users, particularly the newbies.
I would not wield power like a hammer of justice, nor would I abuse power like a cackling maniac. I would just help and be nice wherever help and niceness is needed. So vote for me if you prefer a moderate moderator with rainbows and sparkles and glitter who knows how to use the timeout chair appropriately.
i iz speekin gud lolcat. U need halp, i be halpin u. i liek makin gud codez.
You may have also heard some interesting factoids about me. Most of those are humorous fabrications, but I would like to suggest that supporting my election bid is likely to increase your chance of getting shagged by good-looking and/or famous people.
Also, if I am not elected, I would please like my hat returned.
